Maybe You’re Not Too Sensitive

HSP's, the Highly Sensitive Person

Maybe You’re Not Too Sensitive

How many times have you heard it?

You’re too sensitive.
You’re overreacting.
You take everything personally.
You need thicker skin.

For some of us, those words started early—and eventually, we began saying them to ourselves.

But what if being highly sensitive isn’t the same thing as being overly emotional?

Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) may process information deeply and notice subtle changes in tone, body language, relationships, and their surroundings. They may walk into a room and sense that something has changed before anyone says a word.

That’s not weakness. It’s awareness.

Of course, sensitivity can become exhausting. When you’ve spent years monitoring other people’s moods, you can become hypervigilant. You may notice something accurately but then immediately create a story about what it means.

That’s where discernment matters.

The goal isn’t to become less sensitive. It’s to learn how to use that sensitivity without allowing it to use you.

Pause. Observe. Reality-test. Ask yourself: What do I actually know, and what am I assuming?

Set boundaries. Regulate your nervous system. Notice without absorbing. Feel without automatically reacting.

And remember: feelings are information, not instructions.

My recovery journey has taught me that I can have a tender heart and a strong spine. I don’t have to apologize for noticing things. I also don’t have to assume that everything I notice is automatically true.

Maybe you aren’t “too sensitive.”

Maybe you’ve been carrying a powerful tool that you were never taught how to use.

Listen to this episode of The Unhooked Podcast and let’s talk about turning sensitivity into strength.

Always aware,

Annie
